Authentic Turkish delight is the favorite of pastors, community members, and famous people. Turkish cuisine introduced Turkish coffee and Authentic Turkish delight to the world. Everyone is aware that there are deep meanings in the name and taste.
I experienced the deep meaning behind this delight in my early childhood. My grandfather was the famous confectioner and traditional Turkish delight maker of our country. He made many types of Turkish delight. He was known for his majesty, his name and the rose Lokum he made, double roasted and plain Turkish delight. He produced the best rose Turkish delight in that region.
In 1993, when I was a little girl with a red dress and black patent leather shoes, I met my grandfather’s delights. I used to sneak from home to my grandfather’s shop every day. I couldn’t resist seeing my delicious authentic Turkish delight. I even remember one day I finished half the box by myself.
Traditional Turkish delight is the only cultural heritage left from my childhood. The name of my grandfather’s shop was worthy of the glory of Turkish delight. “Tevfik Bey’s Lokumları” shop was full of dollars, especially on Mondays.
I went to my grandfather’s shop on a hot summer day. I had slippers on my feet. My grandfather used to come to the shop at five in the morning. The delicious Turkish delights on the counter seemed like a dream to me. My grandfather didn’t notice that I was coming.
Before I had my breakfast, I popped a pink rose delight in my mouth. It was very tasty and soft. Now there is no such Turkish delight anywhere. While my grandfather was making preparations inside, a tall man in uniform came to the shop. I’m scared when I saw the man. I was a little scared too. The man looked to his right and left. Then he saw me.
I remember my cheeks turning red. Then he said that he came from afar and wanted to take Turkish delight in his hometown. The man bought a box of Turkish delight from my grandfather. He like Turkish delight very much. He knows well the benefits of eating Turkish delight. They sat together and chatted. My grandfather said that Turkish delight is a cultural heritage. I realized what that means. Now I understand much better.
Now I am 30 years old and I have my own patisserie. My grandfather is no longer alive. But there is a very important cultural heritage left to me. The name of this heritage is Turkish delight. In my patisserie, I sell Turkish delight as well as pastries, pies, and cakes. There is no secret recipe of my grandfather in my delights. Of course, my hand tastes not good as he did.
Today’s Turkish delight does not have the flavor of my childhood. But I am always grateful to my grandfather. I am grateful for the time I spent with my grandfather. I am a mother. I want my children to grow up with this unique flavor too. My daughter and son are helping me at the bakery. They try to explain how they made Turkish delight to the guests. I always say the same to my loved ones.
The events that take place in a person’s life one day become the center of his life. Delicious and various Authentic Turkish delights have also become a part of my life. I wish my grandfather was alive. If only he could see that I am continuing this cultural legacy he left me. I miss my childhood so much now. But, I’m very lucky to have such a beautiful flavor.
